Is there a hosted MCP server for databases?
Yes: mcpdata is a hosted database with its MCP server built in, at https://<instance>.mcpdata.org/mcp. There's nothing to install or run: connect your assistant with the address and a key, and it can list, query and write tables and build reports.
Steps
- Connect your assistant to the public demo. It's a read-only instance with 10 million synthetic orders,
so you can try this before you have your own. In Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http mcpdata-demo https://demo.mcpdata.org/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer cdb_live_PkVoldus8qcE-hqffjajNZzQwiA7rTHMoR4RLSAxsCE"
The key is public on purpose: it can only read the demo's sample data. For Claude Desktop, Cursor and other apps, see Connect your AI.
- Ask your question. Give your AI this prompt:
Using mcpdata, what tables are there, and what does Demo.Customers contain?
| table | rows | last_updated |
|---|---|---|
| Demo.Orders | 10,005,000 | 2026-10-27 20:05:07.103000 |
| Demo.Products | 2,000 | 2026-10-27 19:50:37.321000 |
| Demo.Customers | 200,000 | 2026-10-27 19:50:36.983000 |
Synthetic data: the demo's orders are generated, not real customers.
The assistant needs mcpdata connected (step 1) to run the query.
Why this works
A self-run MCP server for a database means installing it, keeping it running, and exposing your database to it. A hosted one is just an address. Here the storage, the query engine and the MCP server are one service, with roles, per-instance encryption keys and an audit log.
